Initial Review
The initial review of an item being offered to us for purchase is via detailed photos of the item, the paperwork and box that come with it, prior to receipt. Many counterfeits are rejected at this step. Reasons for rejection at this initial stage can include, but are not limited to:
- incorrect serial numbers
- serial number not appropriate for that model
- missing stamps
- stitching not to brand standards
- brand logo mis-sized
Furthermore, we warn sellers that if they send in a counterfeit item, they will be responsible for all costs of shipping (and duties).
Physical Evaluation
Once an item comes in for review, it is physically evaluated and authenticated. Further reasons for rejection at this stage can include, but are not limited to:
- material not to brand standards
- diamonds not to brand standards
- quality control (finish) not to brand standards
- metal composition not to brand standards
Brand Paperwork
Part of our authentication process is to request any brand paperwork and receipts from the seller. As such, we typically get brand certificates and/or receipts for approximately half of the items we buy from Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels (most other jewelry brands do not provide such certificates of authenticity).
Technology Servicing
Among other methodologies, myGemma uses a Thermo Scientific Precious Metals Analyzer to test metal purity for compliance. For example, this is used on the hardware of Hermès Birkins and Cartier LOVE bracelets to ensure the metal compositions match the brands' standards.
In addition, myGemma uses a UV lamp to check diamonds for fluorescence (which for some brands can be an indicator of a replica) and to check handbags for third-party retouching. myGemma does not accept handbags that have been "re-painted" to improve the condition.
The Bottom Line
We stand behind our authentication process and guarantee every item for its authenticity.
If a brand states that the item is not genuine, we will refund 100% of the purchase price.
