What Accessory Trends Were Seen At Fashion Week?

With all primary fashion weeks now wrapped up for 2022, we look at what trends were seen at fashion week. These are the accessory trends that popped up in the SS23 collections and how you can get your hands on them, sustainably and for less.

    New York fashion week

Often, when we talk about fashion trends after fashion week, the clothes are often seen as the piece de resistance. However, we’re here to discuss all things accessories. So, what accessory trends were seen at fashion week for SS23?

    What Is Fashion Week?

There are several fashion weeks that tend to take place around the same time of the year. Although they happen around the globe, the ones that garner the most attention are in what are known as the fashion capitals of the world. The fashion capitals are known as the ‘Big Four’. These cities include: New York, London, Milan, and Paris.

The original fashion week was in New York in 1943. The shows were made for buyers, offering an alternative to Paris designers. New York hosts some of the more sales-driven shows, while Paris is still the epicentre of haute couture.

The dominant shows display the following year’s collections from Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Brands may choose to showcase collections in the form of shows and presentations for collections in between, however, the biannual shows are the best-known and most crucial for the press. The main fashion shows tend to take place in February and September.

    1. Lavish & Fanciful Embellishments

Fashion is still reacting in celebratory terms to the freedom of coming out of a global pandemic. Gone are the days when sweatpants and comfort reigned supreme. SS23 enjoyed frivolous and fun details.

In the clothing line-up, this meant exaggerated silhouettes and lots of embellishment, which was also reflected in the shoes and bags. Dior saw a strong, feminine aesthetic, showcasing a Victorian-inspired look with a contemporary streetwear twist. For Chanel, micro accessories swathed in mini crystals were sent down the runway. Louis Vuitton enlarged travel tags to create unique bags with a travel-infused direction.

    2. Nature Meets Digital

For LOEWE, accessories are never an afterthought. This season’s collection took a digital approach at Fashion week. While we saw pixelated clothing on the runway, the shoes and bags were just as striking. The brand combined a mixture of nature motifs with plastic and shiny facades, creating a conversation around the contrasting aspects of the modern-day lifestyle. While some shoes were decorated with floral motifs, others were made up of deflated balloons.

    3. Fluttering Feathers & Fringing

Texture is key for SS23. Chanel and Louis Vuitton both embraced feathers in their line-ups, while Bottega Veneta and Victoria Beckham included heavy fringing. Feathered and fringed bags have long been a style staple, making it an easy way to include this trend in your repertoire. Molly Goddard and Thom Browne infused their collections with cowboy references, which ties in perfectly with the fringing trend.

    4. Utilitarian Detailing

There’s a juxtaposition of all things beautiful and practicality for SS23. Louis Vuitton and Dior both included visible drawstring features. Miu Miu and Fendi in particular incorporated this trend, with oversized pockets and straps.

    5. The 00s Live On

The past few years have arguably been ‘90s and ‘00s-trend heavy. We continue to see ‘00s influences, with Fendi heading up the trend at this year's Fashion week. Both Fendi’s Resort ‘23 and SS23 collections were a celebration of all things Y2K. The Resort collection in particular paid homage to the famous Baguette bag, as it is the bag’s 25th anniversary.

Where To Buy The Latest Accessory Trends

As much as sustainability is on everyone’s minds, it’s sometimes difficult to resist every trend that comes along. If you’re on a mission to improve your sustainability credentials, while keeping on top of style, there are ways you can still take part in occasional trends. Instead of shopping for accessories that rely on a niche, passing trend, opt for accessories that give a nod to certain styles. That way, you can still dress to suit current trends, if that’s something that is important to you and your wardrobe.

Another way you can shop sustainably is by buying pre-owned or from thrift stores. myGemma offers a wide selection of luxury accessories from over 50 big designer names such as Chanel, Gucci, and Tiffany & Co.
