    What Is Black Friday?

Marking the end of Thanksgiving in the United States, Black Friday is viewed as the start of the sale shopping period for the holidays. This date is known as a retail sale date in countries across the globe, despite Thanksgiving being an Americas-specific holiday.

With the rise of online shopping, there is also a date called Cyber Monday. This date falls on the Monday after Black Friday. However, the Black Friday sales have grown so much over time that they are sometimes as long as a two-week sale, both in-store and online.

    The History Of Black Friday

As discussed in the following section, the term Black Friday dates back to the 1960s. It is believed that the sales have always been called Black Friday since this era.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that retailers began to market the term to advertise their sales. For some unknown or unrecorded reason, the season for holiday gift shopping couldn’t start until after Thanksgiving. This encouraged retailers to put a real push on Black Friday to drive sales, as shoppers were anxious to wait until the discounted prices.

Why Is It Called Black Friday?

There are multiple explanations that go around as to why the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. The real story is actually not a very positive one.

The first time the phrase Black Friday was used was back in 1869. This however wasn’t the Black Friday we know now and actually referred to the day that gold prices plummeted so much that there was a US market crash. However, the Black Friday we talk of today was first uttered in Philadelphia in the 1950s.

It was Philadelphia’s police department that coined the term after the intense traffic jams and saturated crowds after Thanksgiving. This shows how the term actually has quite negative connotations. Yet, to this day it is still used and is chosen by brands and retailers, demonstrating how the expression has moved away from its less-than-positive roots.

Fun fact: In the 1960s, there was an attempt by PR professionals to shift the expression ‘Black Friday’ to ‘Big Friday’. As we know, it didn’t stick and Black Friday is still what is used six decades later.

What Do I Need To Know About Black Friday 2022?

The primary thing to take into consideration if you’re looking to make some savings on purchases during Black Friday 2022, is that sales aren’t always as they seem. Research has shown that much of Black Friday sales are misleading. Often, the prices are driven up throughout the year and then brought back down on Black Friday and marketed as a sale.

The best way to know if you’re getting a deal is to regularly check the prices of items you’re after so you can gauge whether what you’re buying is actually discounted.

When Is Black Friday Worth It?

A good rule of thumb is if you needed to buy it anyway, then you may get a good deal on Black Friday and that is the right time to buy. Another situation where Black Friday sales can be a good decision is if you know the standard retail price of something and the sale is actually considerably cheaper. For example: if a T-shirt style you like is always $35 no matter the season and on Black Friday it goes down to $27, then you know that is a genuine discount.

When Is Black Friday Not Worth It?

In reality, a lot of the time Black Friday sales are not worth it. There is pressure for consumers to shop deals that are being advertised as once-in-a-lifetime and unbeatable. However, if you don’t need it then you probably shouldn’t be buying it firsthand.

    pre-owned luxury

Instead of racing to make purchases on Black Friday, for the sake of the environment and your wallet, it is a good idea to make considered purchases. With that in mind, choosing to shop pre-owned is the best solution across the board.

    Why To Shop Pre-Owned

There has been a significant shift towards resale over the last few years. Consumers are taking it into their own hands to make sustainable and responsible choices with their money. By choosing to shop pre-owned, you are giving items a new lease on life and preventing them from going to waste. Pre-owned is your alternative to Black Friday 2022 sales and the best part is, you can shop pre-loved at any point in the calendar.
