A Heritage in Bloom is composed of a bountiful array of gemstones, 11,551 to be exact. In addition to white diamonds there are hundreds of white mutton fat jades, icy green jadeites and pink diamonds. The gemstones come in various shapes including rounds, ovals, and marquises to just name a few.

The necklace consists of two layers that wrap around the neck, both of which are adorned with diamonds of various cuts. At the center of each layer is a sizeable round cut diamond. The bottom layer features the necklace’s largest stone, a 104 ct. round brilliant diamond. Hanging from the lower half of the necklace are a large marquise cut diamond, two diamond encrusted butterflies that represent good luck and an assortment of smaller white diamonds to create balance. Wrapping around the back of the neck are two diamond encrusted bats which symbolize good luck.

A Heritage in Bloom can be worn 27 ways by removing certain sections and replacing them with others or by removing them entirely. 27 is an important number in Chinese culture as 27 is the cube of 3 and the number three symbolizes infinity. Each variation of A Heritage in Boom has its own name, some of which are Happy Encounter, Jade Butterfly and One in a Million.

Astonishingly, all of the A Heritage in Bloom’s white diamonds are from the same raw diamond, known as the Cullinan Heritage. When found, the Cullinan Heritage was a 507.55 carat type IIA diamond, meaning that the diamond exceptionally rare and free of impurities. Each white diamond has the highest color grade of D and highest clarity grade of IF (internally flawless). Using an entire family of diamonds cut from the same rough stone within a single piece of jewelry was considered to be “an artistic decision unheard of in a contemporary piece.”

A Heritage in Bloom costs a staggering $200 million, making it by far the most expensive necklace in the world. The necklace’s 104 ct. main stone alone is valued at $35 million. The 507.55 ct. Cullinan Heritage raw diamond, which all of the necklace’s diamonds are cut from, cost $35.3 million when originally brought to the diamond market. Naturally, such a massive and expensive raw diamond would result in a piece of great value. For comparison, the second most expensive diamond necklace in the world, the Incomparable, is worth $55 million and consists of 637 carats of diamonds.

This elaborate necklace isn’t Chow Tai Fook’s only major jewelry investment, this company proudly owns the world’s most expensive diamond ring, known as the Pink Star which cost them $71.2 million dollars.

It’s no surprise that Chow Tai Fook requested Wallace Chan to create A Heritage in Bloom. Chen is a masterful jewelry artist who founded his own gemstone carving workshop in 1987 when he was just 17. Chen is the first Chinese jewelry artist to ever have the privilege to exhibit and deliver speeches at the Gemological Institute of America. To add to his accomplishments, Chen invented the “Wallace Cut,” which creates the illusion of a three dimensional image inside a gemstone.

When discussing his partnership with Chow Tai Fook to make A Heritage in Bloom, Chen stated, “we have a shared dream – to realize a creation that can be passed on from generation to generation with this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.” Furthermore, when Chen saw the breathtaking 104 ct. main diamond he said, “When I saw the petals of the light in the stone - the infinite reflections of light. It bloomed in my heart like a flower of my dreams. And it inspired the necklace's design.' The necklace required 47,000 hours to make and 22 artisans lead by Chen. Upon the necklace’s completion Dr. Henry Cheng, chairman of Chow Tai Fook, stated, “Today we complete a journey we began five years ago, and we could not be more proud of the exceptional and historic creation that has emerged.”
