The Lowdown: Olivier Rousteing Exits Balmain

After 14 years at the helm of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing has announced he is stepping down as Creative Director.

Olivier Rousteing Balmain

Olivier Rousteing took over the role in April 2011 at the age of 25. This made him one of the youngest creative directors ever appointed at a major Paris fashion house.

Under his creative direction, Balmain evolved into a global luxury powerhouse, fuelled by star-studded runway shows, social media fervour (such as the ‘Balmain Army’) and collaborations that married high fashion and pop culture.

In an Instagram caption, Rousteing writes: ‘Today marks the end of my Balmain era. Sixteen years ago, I began this Balmain adventure without knowing what the future would hold. What an extraordinary story it has been–a love story, a life story. None of it would ever have been possible without my chosen family, my team, the group, and all the people who believed in me from the very beginning. [...]’

It has been announced that Antonin Tron will succeed Rousteing, while Rousteing has yet to announce his next career move.

Olivier Rousteing Before Balmain

Before taking the reins at Balmain, Olivier Rousteing began his fashion career at Roberto Cavalli, where he worked for around five years. He started as a designer for the women’s ready-to-wear line and quickly rose through the ranks to become Head of the Women’s Studio. His work at Cavalli was defined by glamorous, body-conscious silhouettes, which was an aesthetic that would later shape his vision at Balmain.

By the time he joined Balmain in 2009 as Head of Women’s Ready-to-Wear, Rousteing had already built a reputation for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to blend opulence with modern edge.
