What Is The Most Prestigious Watch Brand?

According to our luxury watch expert, Tom Pozsgay, the most prestigious watch brand possesses “great exclusivity, impressive craftsmanship and a long history of watchmaking.” There is no brand that greater encapsulates these traits than Patek Philippe. Since their founding in 1839, Patek Philippe has been committed to producing timepieces that are intricate, reliable and sophisticated.

As master watchmakers, Patek Philippe’s rigorous standard of quality for all of their timepieces has been recognised by the watchmaking community. Patek Philippe watches have been seen on the likes of celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres, Brad Pitt, Paul McCartney, and even Albert Einstein. With their artisanal techniques, history of achievements, tight production and hefty price points, it’s no wonder why Patek Philippe is the most prestigious watch brand.

The History Of The Most Prestigious Watch Brand

In 1839 Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek founded Patek, Czapek & Co. where they created custom pocket watches for royalty and the elite. They were later joined by Adrien Philippe, the creator of the keyless winding and setting mechanism. Patek and Philippe produced their first pocket watch with Philippe’s keyless winding and hand-setting system in 1845, leading the watchmakers to later change their name to Patek Philippe & Co. in 1851.

Throughout their history, Patek Philippe has continuously strove for innovations, such as when they debuted the first wristwatch in 1868 for the Hungarian countess Koscowicz, invented the world’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925 and made the most complicated mechanical pocket watch of its time with 24 complications in 1989. Their prowess for innovation continues to this day, recently seen in 2016 with the $2.2 million USD (over £17 million) Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300 wristwatch which featured 20 complications.

Achievements Of The The Most Prestigious Watch Brand

As the most prestigious watch brand, Patek Philippe has no shortage of achievements. With over 100 patents to their name, several revolutionised watchmaking, such as the invention of the keyless winding mechanism and first perpetual calendar wristwatch. Patek Philippe has set the standard of technical excellence which they have maintained throughout their entire watchmaking history.

Patek Philippe watches are truly timepieces that can be worn for lifetimes if well maintained. The brand boasts that they can service any of their watches, dating all the way back to their original timepieces. Patek Philippe emphasises their timepieces’ longevity, dependability and timeless style” with their Generations ad that states, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.”

Patek Philippe has set the standard of technical excellence especially when it comes to complications. They have been commissioned to create some of the most complex watches, one notable piece is the Henry Graves Jr. Supercomplication, made for the wealthy banker and watch collector in 1933. With two dials and 23 complications including a perpetual calendar, sidereal time and celestial chart of the sky over Manhattan, the Henry Graves Jr. Supercomplication required over 900 parts, three years to design and six years to produce. In 2014, this timepiece sold for $23.98 million USD (over £18 million), making it the most expensive watch ever sold at auction. It’s no surprise that of the 10 most expensive watches in the world, Patek holds 7 spots.

All Patek Philippe movements were proudly stamped with the Geneva Seal as a hallmark of excellence. The Geneva Seal was created in 1886 to protect the integrity of the Geneva watchmaking guild and is coveted among watchmakers. But as of 2009, Patek Philippe decided to part with the Geneva Seal and manufacture all of their watches with their own Patek Philippe Seal. Patek Philippe made this change because they felt that this organization did not pay enough attention to the performance of the movement or to the quality of the entire timepiece.

Through their own seal, Patek Philippe is expressing their independence as well as their philosophy of excellence and commitment to continuous refinement with every timepiece. As Patek Philippe is involved with every step of the creation process from the design, component manufacture and to the actual casing, their emblem guarantees the exceptional quality of their watches from all aspects.
