You may have a preference when it comes to the color of your hardware, or perhaps it just depends on the style of bag. In this guide, we will be discussing all things Chanel hardware.

Get the lowdown on what types of hardware Chanel has and how the maison’s hardware portfolio has evolved over the years. myGemma’s series on Chanel hardware aims to give you the information you need to make that Chanel purchase and get it right.

    First up? Chanel fastenings.

    What Is Hardware?

When we talk about hardware on a handbag, it is referring to any metal details. This could be the fastening, any decorative detailing, a chain strap, etc.

Generally the hardware will be presented in gold or silver, but it can be made from a number of different materials. Hardware can also be a copper or rose gold color, gunmetal, colored or black or white.

The upcoming guide to Chanel hardware will address the color and material of Chanel hardware.

    About Chanel Hardware

Chanel has a number of signature hardware details. These include the leather and chain shoulder strap and the CC logo closure that features on the front.

The hallmarks are often used to help authenticators decipher whether a bag is genuine or not. Lower-cost items also replicate these details to feign luxury, which is something to look out for.

    Chanel Fastenings

    1. The Mademoiselle Lock

    Chanel 2.55 bags

If you are acquainted with the Chanel 2.55 bag, then you will have noticed that the flap bag does not have the classic CC logo.

The 2.55 bag came out in February of 1955, hence its name. You can still find them today and they feature what is known as the Mademoiselle lock. This turn-lock has a rectangular shape for an understated look.

Apparently the name Mademoiselle comes from the fact that Coco Chanel never married.

    2. Chanel CC Turn-Lock

    Chanel CC bags

On the Classic Flap bags, one of the hallmark details is the CC turn-lock on the front. The Chanel Classic Flap Bag was reimagined by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1980s, heavily inspired by the 2.55 bag.

The two key differences are the interwoven leather and chain strap and the CC logo lock. On vintage bags, the CC logo lock was gold-plated.

This interlocking CC logo hardware features on both the Single Flap and the Double Flap models. It is also used on other Chanel bag models, too.

    3. Chanel CC Plaque

The Chanel Boy Bag is the Classic Flap’s edgier sister. This bag features a plaque on the front with a push-lock closure instead of turn lock. The fastening has a chunkier appearance than the Mademoiselle lock or the CC logo closure. It is currently exclusive to the Boy Bag.

The Boy Bag is another one of Karl Lagerfeld's contributions to the Chanel brand. The name 'Boy' was inspired by one of Coco Chanel's lovers, Boy Capel.

    4. Leather & Metal CC Logo

This logo closure can be seen on the Chanel 19 Bag, which was released in 2019. The logo detail incorporates a twist-lock closure in the center. A combination of interwoven leather and metal pays homage to Chanel’s signature leather and chain shoulder strap.

The intricate fastening detail adds a decorative element to the soft silhouette of the Chanel 19 Bag. The detailing is perfect for counteracting the softer and more casual nature of the bag, all while adding that intrinsically Chanel aesthetic.

    5. Other Fastenings

Other fastenings include a simple zip fastening or a drawstring closure.

    Are Chanel Bags Worth It?
